Bernie Scolaro

I'm an Italian Catholic who was raised in New York by parents who instilled in me the values of love and faith. I am a retired public high school counselor from Iowa.  I live in Sun City with my lifelong partner.  We have owned our home since 2010 and have lived here full-time for the past 2 years.  Prior, I had visited the Lowcountry yearly since the mid-1980's and had owned a timeshare on HHI. I am a lifelong Democrat and a lifelong member of the National Education Association.

Although most of my experience is from Iowa, I have observed very similar patterns in these 2 GOP-led states.  I believe that I can bring that knowledge and first-hand experience to help lift this community.

I had a unique experience living in Iowa, being first in the nation (until recently), and being part of a caucus state. My membership in a “Truman Club” gave me interaction with most Democratic political candidates in intimate home settings.   I was a Caucus captain for Hillary Clinton and a Caucus secretary for the 2020 election.  Prior to Kamala Harris' campaign ending, the campaign sought my personal endorsement as an education and labor leader.

As a teacher union president, I have spoken up for students, teachers, and public educators with administrators, political candidates, and school board members.  My colleague and I ran a breakout session at the NEA conference in Chicago for other states that are potentially losing collective bargaining rights.

As a school board member, I drafted resolutions to keep public money in public schools and to support our LGBTQ+ youth.  I spoke against vouchers at a public hearing at the Iowa Capitol.   I used my platform to raise awareness of bills affecting the school system, including those that included topics of DEI, book banning, and guns in schools.

As an LWV Board member, I worked several tables to help register citizens to vote, including following a naturalization ceremony.

I am eager to share my faith and love with this community.
